If you run communications on social platforms, you need to know both a given brand's strategy and the current social media trends. So today we are looking at what the first half of 2021 brought to the world of social media.
- Something new in social media for Instagram users! It will be easier for them to reach the posts that matter to a brand, but they may not see how many likes that content collected.
- Facebook is testing new tools for displaying Stories and for distributing dedicated newsletters on social media. More monetization of information – a definite social media trend in 2021.
- TikTok is shaping social media trends, and apparently that's only the beginning. The platform intends to revolutionize the entire HR industry. Will we soon be applying for jobs straight from social media?
Instagram Guides – the new social media feature of 2021
One of this year's most important new features in social media is Instagram Guides – in Polish it goes by Katalogi Instagrama (catalogs), and you will also come across Przewodniki Instagrama (guides). With this new feature you can build more interest among your audience and win them over to the topics that matter to your brand.
Instagram Guides is meant to organize content on similar topics into catalogs that are easy to find. If you publish post series and want them to stand out, this tool is definitely worth a look. It is worth noting, though, that in Guides you can not only place posts but also share material tied to a specific location. What's more, this social media tool is a great answer for retail brands that would like to carve out a dedicated space for products without having to write separate posts.

The next significant change, the one that best captures the character of social media trends in 2021, is the option to hide likes. Every Instagram user can make the reactions under individual posts invisible to everyone else. The only clue as to who liked a post will be the handle of a user the viewer already follows. In that case, beyond the names of the selected accounts that liked the post, no specific person shows up – only an enigmatic “and others”.
More monetization and faster content distribution

Another new social media feature that made a lot of noise this year! Facebook has added an option with enormous potential for promoting both big and small brands down the line. It is Facebook Bulletin, for now running only in the US – a dedicated space for writing, publishing and distributing newsletters. A heavily cut-down version has been live since June 29, but month by month more countries, and above all more industries, will be able to build their own templates and newsletters.
And that's not the end of it. Facebook's team is currently testing a new way of displaying Stories, one whose integral element could become… ads! The idea is to let users monetize their own content by adding a sticker featuring a given brand. For now the feature is in testing, and only a few users have full access to the system. That doesn't mean everyone else can only dream of earning a little on their own stories – Facebook has already announced that the feature will be available to all.
Is TikTok a rival to LinkedIn?

Meanwhile TikTok, one of the fastest-growing social media platforms right now, has surprised its users once again. TikTok Resumes is the platform's newest feature, letting you apply for a chosen role with a resume in video form. Given how fast the creative sector keeps growing, it will most likely be one of the most interesting recruitment tools of the coming season.
Right now the new feature is being tested by several dozen American companies, but everything suggests that the people behind TikTok are watching the market closely and are changing the face of the whole HR industry in front of our eyes.
As you can see, social media trends in 2021 span a wide spectrum of categories. They can involve the most popular features and quite small details alike. Whatever your plans for running social media, it's worth paying attention to both kinds of change and update – or coming to our agency.
